6 YEARS IN THE MAKING

This year marked 6 years from when we first launched HUTWOODS, back in August 2013. So much has happened in that time, including opportunities we could only have dreamed of and a loyal customer base that we’re continually grateful for.

HUTWOODS started out as a hobby, learning the craft of candle making and trialling different waxes, wicks, jars and fragrances. The hobby soon turned into a passion project after discovering wood wicks and being surprised how difficult it was to find this type of candle in Australia. We quickly found out that creating candles with wood wicks adds more complexity to the process. It was also really challenging to find eco-friendly wood wicks that were ethically sourced. However, we didn’t want these factors to put us off and were determined to persevere and find a solution.

We were captivated by the crackle that a wood wick makes, reminiscent of the sound from a log fire. We also loved that this added an extra dimension to a candle, allowing you to evoke the senses of sight, smell and sound. We saw an opportunity to be one of the first brands in Australia to pioneer with wood wick candles, made from 100% natural wax. This is something we’re now proudly renowned for and will always shine brightly through our name.

Our philosophy has remained the same since the day we first launched. To us, burning a candle can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing. It can make you feel calm and relaxed, it can change the ambiance of a room and scent even has the power to evoke memories from past experiences.

Our goal was to develop a product range that would encourage people to take the time to invest in themselves and experience a moment of tranquility. We believe this can be achieved by actively engaging with your senses, whether that is taking in the smell of a particular scent, watching the warm glow of a flickering flame or listening to the gentle crackle coming from a wood wick. Our intention was to provide an opportunity to slow down and pause from the rapid pace of daily life. This is demonstrated by our mission, which is our guiding principle and impacts every business decision we make:

Over the past 6 years, we’ve had customers reach out to us sharing experiences where this has been very real for them. From the joys of having one of our scents burning at their wedding and instantly taking them back to that special day, to the calming effect our candle has brought to someone remembering a loved one or reminiscing on a special memory.
